Fibre optic in Nyon, now and in the future Exclusive interview with Jérôme Goulay, Director of Netplus Léman
How would you describe the rollout of fibre optics in Nyon?
The project we're undertaking in Nyon is a particularly exciting one. Netplus Léman is embarking on an initiative to bring fibre optic access to every household in town, which is fantastic news. This rollout, jointly funded with Swisscom - a partnership we're particularly proud of - began in 2024 and will continue over the next three years.
How is the town of Nyon supporting this project?
Nyon has made a vital contribution by backing the project to the tune of 13.5 million Swiss francs. In addition, the city council has arranged for fibre optic cable to be installed in every building in the town. This will enable Nyon's energy suppliers to read electricity meters remotely, in line with the Swiss Confederation's legal obligation to fit 80 per cent of customers with smart electricity meters by 2027.
What benefits will fibre optics bring to the people of Nyon?
This fibre optic network will enable residents and businesses to surf the internet at speeds of up to 10 GB, for fast, seamless access to online services. This is essential for a modern, dynamic town like Nyon, and for its residents, who will no longer be frustrated by the technology they require for their leisure or work activities. It's also important to emphasise that our fibre optic network consumes less electricity, another step in our commitment to environmental sustainability. By choosing fibre optics, we are actively contributing to reducing our carbon footprint and taking care of the environment for future generations.
Does this project include the villages around the town of Nyon?
Yes, of course. We have already started installing our network in 15 villages around Nyon. Many customers are now benefiting from fibre optic connections, marking a new era of top level connectivity for these communities.
How are existing customers switching to the new network?
We have set up a smooth changeover process for our existing customers. Those already connected to our services will see a seamless transition to fibre optics, automatically enjoying the benefits of an ultra-fast connection. At the same time, we're taking this opportunity to connect new customers in the region, to expand our network and serve even more households.
What about fibre optic coverage for people living in villages?
We expect all the residents of these villages to be eligible by the end of the year. We strongly encourage all interested parties to contact us now for specific details on their eligibility and to take advantage of the benefits of fibre optic connections as soon as possible.
How do these developments contribute to the overall improvement of connectivity in the Nyon region?
By extending fibre optics into homes in these villages, we are providing fast, reliable connectivity. Not only does this respond to current communication and entertainment needs, but it also ensures these communities are ready for future technological challenges. We aim to create dynamic, connected environments for our customers, helping them to make the most of online services and stay at the cutting edge of technology.
We're delighted to see the first results of our commitment to these villages and look forward to continuing to improve the digital lives of our customers.
