An In-depth look at gum Disease Interview with the Experts
To gain a greater understanding of gum disease and how it can be treated, we talked to two specialists: Dr. Stéphane Signorini, a dentist, and Nathalie Gaudry, an experienced hygienist.
What is periodontitis and what treatments are available?
Periodontitis is a form of gum disease, affecting the soft tissue and bone that supports the teeth, including the alveolar bone, ligaments, and gingiva. Often chronic and with no obvious symptoms, it can manifest itself in receding gums and bleeding. Various treatments are available, usually performed by a periodontologist, including scaling, cleaning, and root planing, carried out according to each individual case.
Root planning, a non-surgical approach
Root planing is a non-surgical technique carried out under local anesthetic. It aims to remove tartar and bacteria which has accumulated under the gums, using manual or ultrasonic instruments.
Preventing gum disease
Periodontitis can be prevented with regular scaling and rigorous oral hygiene, individually tailored to each patient. Good oral hygiene is the foundation of healthy gums and preventing teeth from becoming loose.
The importance of scaling and the prevention of gum disease
Scaling is a preventative procedure designed to stop the build-up of bacterial plaque and tartar, thus protecting against gum disease, cavities, and other dental decay. The procedure can be performed using ultrasound, air polishing, and fine curettes. It is important to remember that oral bacteria have the potential to colonize the cardiovascular system and cause progressive disease, hence the importance of daily care and regular check-ups with a hygienist.
Tips for healthy gums each individual is encouraged to:
- take regular care of their gums, following the recommendations of their dentist;
- brush at least twice a day (ideally after each meal);
- use dental floss, interdental brushes, or gum stimulators every day to complement brushing;
- consult a healthcare professional for recommendations about appropriate mouthwashes;
- use an effective brushing technique, choosing the most appropriate toothbrush.
