Jeweled nails - are they a fad or a must-have accessory?
Sonia Belgaïd, nail stylist and founder of the Institut de l’Ongle in Nyon answered our questions.
When I started this job 17 years ago, it was already the fashion to have perfect nails all the time, for any occasion. At that time I used the permanent gel on customers’ nails, and they were delighted to be able to have strong, unbreakable nails so they could do anything they wanted without chipping the varnish.
Then came acrylic resin, which is a different technique, then semi-permanent varnish, with a very delicate and natural finish, and soon, I have no doubt, there will be an even simpler and more user-friendly technique, thanks to continuing research in the field of beauty, much to the delight of women everywhere. What I am trying to say is that having beautiful hands and even feet is not a passing trend, but an essential requisite that has stood the test of time. It has been scientifically proven that people feel better about themselves when they feel confident in their outward appearance.
Nail techniques have changed over the years, have styles changed too ?
I would say that there’s more freedom in the choice of styles. Each client chooses the shape and design that best suits their personality, job, or even their mood. Nails have become a medium for self-expression, rather like an artist’s canvas.
Personally, I create paintings on my clients’ nails, I include jewels, symbols, and I even subtly write words on them. The only jewellery a woman needs on her hands today is her fingernails!
The Institut de l’Ongle also offers a range of facial waxing and threading services as well as a selection of 100% natural cosmetics for the face and body which you can peruse either at the institute or online at: www.institut-de-longle.com.
Well-being is a priority for Sonia, and with this in mind the Institut de l’Ongle moved into new, more spacious and brighter premises almost a year ago. It is now located at 36 Grand-Rue, not far from the castle and its former premises.
