Mesotherapy for facial rejuvenation

Ageing is caused by several factors - both external (environmental, food etc) and internal (genetic, hormonal etc). It affects all the organs, including the skin. The result is dry, pale and wrinkled skin, with a loss of elasticity. Mesotherapy uses transdermal micro-injections of vitamins, enzymes, hormones and hyaluronic acid to promote the production of collagen and elastin to stimulate skin cells and decrease the effects of ageing.

Dr Bertrand Mercadier, an aesthetic surgeon, in Lausanne explains how it works.

What is the technique used for mesotherapy and does it hurt?

There are different techniques depending on the level of injection: intra-epidermal, derma- epidermal junction, nappage or deep dermal. Mesotherapy is not painful and does not require anaesthesia or local anaesthesia by applying a cream. It is a medical treatment.

What substances are injected?

The composition of the sterile injections can include several vitamins, with the addition of hyaluronic acid. The goal is to stimulate the fibroblast cells to produce collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid promotes the activation of the fibroblast cells and also the remodelling of the extracellular matrix, allowing an increase in type III collagen.

What kind of results can you expect from mesotherapy and how soon can the benefits be seen?

Clinically, the result is a decrease in the depth of wrinkles, and an improvement in skin elasticity, with a significant improvement in skin texture. Areas that can be treated are the face, neck, décolleté, back of the hands or the scalp. This technique can be used to treat cellulite, in combination with dietary measures or for alopecia (hair loss) and to restore radiance to the face. The results are visible after two to three sessions, after one to three months and must be maintained afterwards by twice yearly injections.

What are the possible complications ?

Complications and side effects are rare and in most cases short-lived; there are few contra- indications. In every case, a clinical examination should take place before the injections.
